ATHLETES WITH DIABETES COME TOGETHER TO SHARE STRATEGIES FOR HEATHY LIVING WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES IN AN ACTIVE AND EXTREME ENVIRONMENT.

On May 17 - 19, 2013 many of today's successful, competitve athletes will volunteer their time and expertise to help children and young adults with type 1 diabetes gain some insight and motivation to maintain tight control of their diabetes before, during and after active lifestyle events such as exercise, competitve sports, social activities, travel, etc... Successful athletes with diabetes like Bill Carlson, Adam Driscoll John Boyer, Niels Knutson, Judith Ambrosini, Bill King, Jamie Molyneux and many more will be working with several clinical professionals to enhance the lifes of attendees at the 3-day diabetes program... being held at Northbay Adventure Camp (www.northbayadventure.com) in North East, Maryland.

Bill Carlson was diagnosed as a high school teenager. "I have been an athlete all of my life. I developed diabetes when I was a high school football player but that didn’t bother me that much. (I) Just had to get things under control and continue what I loved to do most and that was working out."

In 1983, Bill Carlson was the world’s first person with type 1 diabetes to cross the finish line in the Ironman World Championship. He also has one of the top recorded marathon times posted for an athlete with diabetes (2:38). He has competed in some of the worlds toughest endurance challenges and proven to all that diabetes doesn't stand in the way of athletic success unless you let it.

Bill found his passion for exercise and fitness was something that many others with diabetes were not doing but with education and proven strategies in glucose control, they could. Exercise is great for people who have diabetes. So BillI became and advocate for change and turned himself into an example, a role model, for others who have diabetes. He has and continues to educate, motivate and inspire all of us!

"I will continue my athletics, diabetes or not. I just want to bring as many people along with me as I can in this endurance way of life. What a joy it is to really fly under your own power."
- Bill Carlson
